People of the Seventh Realm

For all of you who are fans of Human romance, all of you who love the utter fire and magic you can experience through your own five senses during love-making, I’d like you to consider something for me, for just a moment.  Consider what the act of love and sex would be like if you had seven senses, instead of just five.  Hard to picture, isn’t it, given that we have only five senses and thus nothing to compare with the experience of having seven.

But think about it.  What would it be like to experience the world–and our most intimate Human experience, love-making–with your eyes, ears, touch, smell, taste–and your mind?

I can hear you now.  The brain is our most sexual organ...Yes, of course.  And I agree with the notion that the brain is a sexual organ.  It is involved in receiving sensation and in generating fantasy which, undoubtedly, can enhance the sexual response.  But what I’m talking about is more.

Suppose your mind* could perceive things about the physical world and the energies that pulse through it, that your other senses could not.  Suppose, further, that your mind could perceive phenomena that Humans could not, but could also act upon what it perceives in observable ways.  Can you imagine how that would be to have such gifts?

What if your mind could perceive the energy of someone’s thought transmission and then could act upon that energy to respond in kind–mind to mind?  Or, what if your mind could perceive the natural forces and energies that are all around us and in all objects, and what if your mind could channel some of these natural forces to, say, move objects, or change them in some way?  How frighteningly cool would that be?

Well, here’s the thing: there are people who have seven senses. I found them through my Portal.  They call themselves the Sensates, or the people of the Seventh Realm.  They are not Human.  They cannot interbreed with Humans, so there are no Sensate-Human hybrids.  And Humans don’t know they exist.

Sensates call Humans the People of the Fifth Realm.  There are gifted Humans, those who have the capacity to perceive some things with their minds like Sensates can, but these gifted Humans do not have the mind ability to act upon what they perceive.  Humans, at least those who believe in these gifted Humans, call these people “psychic” or “clairvoyant,” or some such label.  The Sensates call them People of the Sixth Realm. Some Sixth Realm Humans know about the Sensates and live among them.  However, the Sensates have kept themselves hidden from Fifth Realm Humans since the coming of the male gods into the world, many millennia ago.

Here is what happened.
As time passed and people began living in large groups and growing their food instead of hunting and gathering, they were able to more easily manage the lean times.  They had enough surplus to trade for items they wanted without waiting on the Earth to provide.  For these reasons and many more, Humans turned away from the wisdom of the Great Mother and embraced that of the Annointed One of Many Names.

In spite of this god’s gentle teachings, Humans grew bold in their hubris and in their jealousy of the gifts Sensates were born with.  Humans claimed dominion over the Earth and its creatures.  Sensates knew dominion really belonged to the Great Mother, who in turn beckoned the Father Sun, the giver of warmth and light.  Sensates believed their gifts were bestowed by the Great Mother, not the Anointed One.  Over time it became perilous to claim the gifts of a Sensate.

Communion with the Great Mother Became Perilous

It became even more perilous to be known as one who claimed communion with the Earth and the Great Mother.

Sensates were powerful, but their numbers were few. After a time, the Sensate Elders determined that in order for their people to survive, all the Sensate must go into hiding, and so they did.  Slowly, and with great care, they moved out of their communities and family groups, and scattered themselves among the Humans.  They hid their gifts and taught their children how to not give themselves away in an unguarded moment.

They continued to live according to the Code of their ancestors, but after a few generations Sensates were known only to each other and to a carefully chosen few of the Sixth Realm Humans whose families had always known about the Sensates.  These Sixth Realm Humans were sworn to secrecy, too.

Today, the Sensates live among us, but they are hidden.  Perhaps they are identifiable to those who know what to look for, but when most Humans encounter a Sensate, they see only someone like themselves–perhaps a little more attractive in an ethereal kind of way, perhaps a bit more skilled physically, and with undoubtedly odd names–but otherwise, just like all the other Humans on the planet–almost.

The Sensates have flourished even while being hidden–in all ways but one.  The more children Humans bore, the fewer came to the Sensate.  The few that were conceived were fragile during gestation.  Once born, they were strong, but something was interfering with the conception of Sensate babies, and no one knew what it was.  They did know, however, that unless they determined the cause of it soon, and repaired it, the Sensates would be doomed to extinction within just two or three generations.

I learned about the Sensates when one of them dropped through my Portal.  It was a little confusing at first, because Maywind Morrisey didn’t know what she was.

Maywind Doesn’t Know She is Sensate

She had never heard of Sensates, knew nothing about them, including why the Sensate Renegades came to kill her one day, just as they had killed her Grandfather, Douard Morrisey, her only family, the year before. She had no idea why these killers were after her. She was terrified. And so she ran for her life.  She fled from the family home in Manhattan to the city of San Francisco.  She was following the only clue she had about the murder of Douard.  Her intention was to find out who his murderers were, and get the killers off her back in the doing of it.

Fortunately, but unbeknownst to her, Maywind’s Sensate godparents had been watching over her since Douard’s death.  When Maywind fled to San Francisco, they sent someone to her aid.

Thus, the story of the reluctant Maywind and her secret hero, Major Ash O’Connor flowed out of the Portal and onto my screen page.

Major Ash O’Connor, Sensate Code Enforcer

Perhaps I will be free to share all of it with you someday.

I can let you know, however, that these two did not solve the problem of potential Sensate extinction–at least not entirely–but their actions did open the door to a huge conspiracy that has the potential to change the spiritual and social life of every Sensate on the planet and beyond.

Yes, I said “beyond.”  Because, I was able to learn later, some Sensates have an eighth sense, the ability to travel through time with the power of their minds.

Stay tuned for the next installment of the Sensates, Maywind Morrisey and Mountain Ash O’Connor, and others, coming soon.

*For those of you who noticed and question it, I use “brain” and “mind” interchangeably.  I don’t claim to be a monist–or a dualist, for that matter.  It is simply convenient. The discussion of monism vs. dualism is boring to me, in any case. The story is much more interesting, no matter whose story it is.
